On to Tradition? Well yes, but how?
I enjoy reading conservative analyses of our postmodern condition and find much that I agree with in such analyses.

It appears to me that a wholesale revolution of consciousness is occurring in western society. Traditional values derived from Christianity and Classical philosophy are being jettisoned and replaced with atheistic leftist principles.

Unfortunately I am often left wondering what can be done to halt the consequent decline in western society. Leftist political philosophy seems to leave a moral vacuum in its wake. Eastern European countries seem to be testament to these ill effects.

Once the leftist philosophy is abandoned the traditional values do not seem to return. Instead pure selfishness and unvarnished vice breaks out.

Once society has been damaged by leftist philosophy, how can the damage be repaired? There do not seem to be many examples of recovering societies in the world today, the decline seems to be universal.

Can anyone point to any country which has recovered from excessive leftist politics? Can anyone suggest how western decline can be reversed?

The clearest analysis is that it is impossible to cure Western society as it stands, through development of its own principles and institutions. Instead, new principles and institutions must grow up, or at least non-mainstream principles develop, to the point of replacing those now dominant. That would happen because they are more functional.

I suppose the idea is that revolution has come to seem more workable than reform. That, I suppose, is the meaning of counterrevolution. An historical analogy would be to the growth of Christianity within Rome.

In the final two or three pages of "From Dawn to Decadence," Jacques Barzun speculates about the beginnings of a new culture in the coming decades, and its later development in the following century or so. If anyone has read it, any comments?

Why not scan the pages and post them, if you can, so we could all comment?
